Disorders: Metatarsalgia
What is Metatarsalgia?
Metatarsalgia is a condition that causes pain in the ball of the foot, which is located under the front of the foot and especially around the base of the toes. It is often the result of increased pressure on the balls of the feet.
Causes of Metatarsalgia
One common cause of metatarsalgia is ill-fitting footwear. High-heeled or tight shoes can force the ball of the foot into a small space, increasing pressure on the area and causing pain or discomfort. Other causes of metatarsalgia include Morton’s neuroma, fracture, and irritation of the sesamoid bones or soft tissues.
Symptoms of Metatarsalgia
The most typical symptom of metatarsalgia is a feeling as if walking on stones. Other symptoms include throbbing, burning, or stabbing pain, pain radiating to other parts of the lower limb, and tingling or numbness in the toes.
Care for Metatarsalgia:
► Rest and Avoid Stress: During the acute phase of metatarsalgia, it is important to rest and avoid stress on the affected foot. Try to avoid activities that may aggravate the pain.
► Cold therapy: Applying ice or a cold pack to the affected area can help reduce pain and inflammation. Place a towel between your skin and the ice pack to avoid damaging the skin.
► Stretching and Exercises: Stretching exercises can help to relieve tension and pressure on the ball of the foot. Exercises that strengthen the foot muscles can also help to reduce pain and prevent future injuries.
► Insoles and Arch Supports: Custom insoles can help to redistribute pressure on the foot and reduce pain. Learn more about FootBalance custom insoles here.
► Proper Footwear: Wearing suitable shoes for your specific foot type can help to reduce pressure on the ball of the foot. Avoid high heels and narrow fitting shoes.
