Disorders: Hallux Valgus

What is Hallux Valgus?

Hallux valgus, also known as a bunion, is a common foot deformity characterized by the inward rotation of the base joint of the big toe, leading to the formation of a bony bump on the inside of the big toe joint. The condition is often caused by long-term pressure on the big toe joint, forcing it out of alignment.

Causes of Hallux Valgus

Hallux valgus can be caused by the mechanics and structure of the foot, as well as hereditary factors. The pressure from an unfavorable way of walking or abnormal foot shape can cause the base of the big toe to turn inward towards the other toe. Wearing ill-fitting, narrow shoes can worsen the pain, but they are typically not the underlying cause.

Symptoms of Hallux Valgus

The most common symptom of hallux valgus is pain at the bony bump formed at the base of the big toe joint. The joint may be stiff, and inflammation can cause the area to ache and feel hot. Changes in the position of the toe can also lead to radiating pain in the foot. The lowering of the transverse arch and a widening of the front part of the foot are other potential symptoms.

Care for Hallux Valgus

► Rest and avoid activities that aggravate the pain. Allow your foot to heal by avoiding high impact exercises and reducing the amount of time spent on your feet.

► Apply ice to the affected area to reduce inflammation and pain. This can be done several times a day for 15-20 minutes at a time.

► Wear comfortable and supportive shoes that provide good arch support and cushioning. Avoid wearing high heels, flip flops, and shoes with poor arch support.

► Stretching exercises that focus on the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and calf muscles can help alleviate pain and promote healing. Consult with a physical therapist or podiatrist for personalized stretching exercises.

► Consider using custom insoles that are designed to provide additional arch support and cushioning. These should be made specifically to your feet for a personalized fit.
